How To Detect Fake Omega Watches
They say there is no greater form of flattery than imitation. Indeed, fake Omega watches have been around for many years and as the brand's success grew so did the number and quality of imitations. As the price of the genuine item increases, so will the quality of the fake Omega watches, since the forgers can invest more money into production. Some of the modern fakes are so good, that only an expert opening the watch and closely examining it can authenticity be determined. Many of these are also sold with fake boxes and papers.
There are many sites offering Omega replicas - remember that "replica" is a nice word for "fake". These sites will also use stock photos of real watches to advertise their wares. I can promise you that when you get the watch it will not look as good as the watch in the picture. Make sure to ask for a picture of the actual watch for sale!
Personally, I hate the idea of wearing anything fake.
If you are not sure about the watch you are being offered, walk away.
Here are some tips before you buy.
Modern Omega Watches:
- Check out our website and other resources on the web. Educate yourself on what typical fakes look like and how the genuine item should look.(check out our - video)
- Have the watch examined by an expert or authorized Omega dealer. As I said, some of these are so good you cannot tell without opening them.
- A Watch being sold with box and paper does NOT guarantee that the watch is genuine. Have it checked.
- If the deal seems too good to be true, then it is. NO ONE sells a $2000 watch for $100 because they can't be bothered to look for the papers or have it authenticated.
Vintage Omega watches:
Omega made many models over the years in many variations. There are also a lot of Omega parts floating around. So while faking is not a major issue with vintage Omega watches, there are some models that are faked. Also, it is very common to see vintage Omega watches that are made up from parts of different watches (these are called marriage or Franken watches). These watches never left the factory that way and collectors look down at this practice. If you have such a watch you will likely only be able to sell it for parts.
- It is critical to educate yourself on what the watch you want should look like. The best options are to register and login into the Omega official database or to read relevant reference material.
